Founded in 2007, our current owners Ned and Mina became the Head Potatoes in 2010. They have worked with a dedicated team of potato professionals, to cultivate Proper Crisps from seed to success. There’s a reason we’re the fastest growing snack company in New Zealand.
It’s because we like to do things… Well… Err… Properly; and we believe that starts from the ground up. Here’s our recipe to ensure you dig Proper Crisps.
Proper Ingredients - Potato Crisps
We use the finest New Zealand potatoes, sourcing the Agria whenever possible.
We currently source our awesome Agria’s from Simon, the same third-generation South Island Temuka farmer that we’ve worked with since we began; and Jason who has a farm in beautiful Pukekohe. That’s right, we’re on first name terms with our growers; because we work closely with them to ensure their farming practices meet our exacting standards.
But we don’t stop there, we then cook your crisps in the best quality imported High Oleic Sunflower oil, this smooth operator is high in unsaturated fat, low in saturated fat, and has no trans fat, we don’t accept anything less!
P.s. You'll never find Palm Oil in our bags, the orangutans will thank you for it!!
And what about the salt? Your Proper Crisps contain only the finest Marlborough Sea Salt, sourced from the snowy stacks that grace the landscape at Lake Grassmere.
Proper Crisps are always 100% natural. They are gluten, dairy, GMO free and vegan friendly, with no added MSG.
The Proper cooking process
The selection process that a potato must go through to reach the ranks of a Proper Crisp is rigorous, we lovingly hand sort and trim our spuds, it’s how we place the sunshine in every bag!
Once they’ve passed the intake inspection, they are sliced to the optimum thickness, and begin their path to becoming a perfect Proper Crisp.
They are cooked and hand stirred in small batches, before they get dizzy with deliciousness as we spin them in a specially-designed centrifuge to shake off excess oil.
Your Proper Crisps are inspected again as part of their passing out parade… Just before the flavour magic happens!

We want you to savour the flavour of your Proper Crisps, and that’s why all our seasonings are 100% natural.
Rosemary and Thyme – Ooh là là! We raided the garden to create these tantalisingly tasty French inspired Proper Crisps. Thyme and rosemary are imported from Europe; the herbs are dried and ground just prior to the cooking process to release the natural oils, ensuring your crisps have the freshest taste and flavour possible.
Sweet Smoked Paprika – Olé! Sizzling with Sweet smoked Spanish seasoning, these Proper Crisps are flavoured with mature sweet bell peppers that have been naturally dried over hot smoked oak chips and ground to perfection.
Apple Cider Vinegar and Sea Salt – Zing a ding ding! We spent many a late night working out a specialist process that means we are able to offer you a crisp that has the genuine mouth puckering more-ishness and taste of real cider vinegar. No compromises and no nasties, it’s the real deal in your bag!

Not content with mastering the art of the proper potato crisp we wanted to give the other veggies a chance to shine as a Proper Crisp.
Proper Kumara Crisps (also known as the Sweet Potato) – Endorsed by celebrity chef, Brett McGregor, our Proper Kumara Crisps are crafted from a medley of orange (Beauregard), yellow (Toka Toka) and red (Owairaka) grown and sourced by Anthony and the Kaipara Kumara team. They are hand stirred in high quality rice bran oil, a worthy source of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids and antioxidant nutrients. Only the best will do! Finished with a dusting of Marlborough Sea salt, we bring you what we (and Brett) consider to be the finest Kumara crisp on the planet!
Proper Parsnip Crisps – Our newest crisp sensation prepared with only the best Parsnips sourced from Kandy of Ohakune and Matthew of Southland, sliced and cooked by hand in the smooth operator that is High Oleic Sunflower Oil, and finished with a light sprinkle of salt. These are great tossed through a salad, added as a garnish on steak, or simply perfect enjoyed straight from the packet!
