Here are just a few of the raving reviews we are getting, and it sure makes us feel all this potato peeling is really worthwhile!
What do you think? Drop us a note and let us know.

“Utterly addictive!”
- Cuisine Magazine issue 134, May 2009

“They are all natural, hand produced, crispy and extremely tasty!”
- Wild Tomato Magazine issue 35, June 2009

“Proper has got it right, with a satisfying crunch and just the right amount of salt.”
- Taste Magazine, October 2009

“We think Proper Crisps really are sunshine in a bag.”
- Syrup Magazine, October 2009

“I can vouch that these crisps taste very different from others – a fresher, better taste.”
- So D’lish online magazine, October 2009

“They really are the best crisps (I dare not call them chips!) we have ever eaten and can’t wait for the next bag.”
- Angela, North Shore City

“Your chips are delicious. We just tried our first pack, yes for morning tea!”
- Amy, Queenstown

“I just found your crisps for the first time and just wanted to drop you a note to say that these are by far the best crisps I have ever had. I’ve lived in the US and the UK before coming to live in NZ and your crisps are far better than anything else here or there. And two thumbs up to Stuart for making this delicious batch!”
- Vicki, Auckland

“Terrific product! Positively addictive and more-ish! Like a crisp should be!”
- Jan, Richmond

“I purchased a packet of Proper Crisps today and I just wanted to say yum yum yum, they are spectacular and I shall be purchasing more in the not too distant future. Thanks for a lovely chip, tasty, nicely salted and not greasy.”
- Maureen, Auckland

“Your product is well thought out and fabulous. Presentation is excellent and the bags have more crisps in them than air. We have all tasted them and like them very much.”
- Purple Carrot Fresh & Wild Grocer, Napier

“They taste like how crisps used to taste before the war.”
- Kathryn’s Grandma

“ I have tried crisps all around the world and I think yours are the best!”
- Vikki, Wellington

“I tried these quite by chance today and they are amazing, I never realised crisps could taste so scrumptious.”
- Robin, Auckland

“YUM! There were 6 of us in the office who were lucky enough to sample the new Proper Crisps. The result was unanimous – bloody lovely!”
- Barbara, Nelson

“We enjoyed our first packet today and I must say they are really GOOD. Thanks for a wonderful product.”

Since then, crisped chips have become big business and the industry has become dominated by huge multinational companies and the original simplicity of making crisps has all but been lost…………until now!!!

Did you know that the majority of “chips” made in New Zealand are made using palm oil? “So what” you might say. Well, there are a couple of so whats that we think consumers should be aware of. Firstly, palm oil has a much higher saturated fat content than sunflower oil (around 14-15% compared with around 3-4% for sunflower oil). Secondly, and far more importantly, the demand for cheap palm oil is fuelling the growth in palm oil plantations and is causing massive deforestation of virgin rainforest in Malaysia and Indonesia where the majority of palm oil comes from, so much so that it is predicted if the current growth of palm oil plantations continues, orang utans will be extinct in the wild in less than 10 years. We think that this is too high a price to pay for a cheap packet of potato chips!

Now, such is the strength of the lobby of big food manufacturers in New Zealand and Australia, they are not required to declare that palm oil is used as an ingredient in their products, they can get away with just declaring “vegetable oil”. We think this is wrong as consumers should have a right to know of the wider consequences of their purchase decisions.

So what are we doing about it? Well obviously we will never use palm oil for making our crisps even though it is less than one third of the price of sunflower oil. We are also an active supporter of Auckland Zoo’s Conservation Fund which is a major participant in orang utan conservation projects in Sumatra and Borneo. We have also written to our MP to ask for his support in changing the food labelling laws in New Zealand.

What can you do? Next time you buy a packet of potato chips which states “vegetable oil” on the ingredients, have a look at the saturated fat content on the nutritional information, if it’s more than 5%, it’s highly probable that it’s palm oil. If you’d like to do more, have a look at the Auckland Zoo link below which detail some practical things that can be done right here in New Zealand to help the cause.
